• BABY BELLY CAKE…

Cake  – 10.10.09

Bethany contacted me awhile back about a pregnant belly baby shower cake.  I had done this particular cake design in the past so it was still pretty fresh on my mind.  The cake was to feed 20 and go with a blue/purple scheme for a baby boy.

I began by baking a soccer ball pans and two small ball pans.  Before I pushed the two small ball cakes together, I cut a straight line down the side of each one so they would press up against each other.  I cut into them again so they would follow the roundness of the belly and sit it place.

After all was cut, I covered the cakes in a thick layer of buttercream and covered with fondant. I left  quite a bit of fondant on the bottom to drape as the dress.  I colored and cut a triangle piece of flesh tone fondant and attached it to the top of the body for cleavage.  I cut strip of white fondant for the trim on the dress followed by the blue for the top ribbon trim and bow.  I used buttercream to pipe the lace on the bottom of the dress. To finish up the cake, I rolled out blue and purple fondant and cut out small flowers.  After placing them around the cake, I piped in the white dots in the center of each flower with buttercream.. After 4 hours, it was complete.

• IT’S WEDDING TIME!

Cake – 08.08.09

This cake has been talked about for awhile with the bride and groom.  But it has only been a few weeks since the final decision was made about their wedding cake, and boy was it a great idea on their part.  The couple  are very close friends and quite the mentor of art I must add.  I was probably more nervous about this cake, but yet honored at the same time to do it because the groom is such an amazing artist himself.

Brandt and Aurora were to wed on August 8, 2009.  They wanted a wedding cake that incorporated who they both were and what they liked.  They decided on a record player (music is Aurora’s passion) and a melting clock as the record (art is Brandt’s passion).  The clock idea came from the famous Salvadore Dali’s great mind.   He often drew melting clocks so I knew it had to be spot on.  They decided on vanilla on strawberry to feed 100, so the adventure began.

As I started planning for this cake, I knew I wanted to go above and beyond what I hoped they had in mind.  I wanted to either make the record/clock spin or the power light to light up.  Since the clock would be melted down the cake, I knew we had to conquer the electrical idea.  Ben and I sat up one stormy night making electricity from batteries,, wire and bulbs. Ironically we conquered our mission while the power was out and had us a nice light to get around the house.  So after this obstacle, it was cake time.

I baked four sheet cakes (two vanilla and two strawberry) and stacked them. I carved an outer edge or the record player and covered with buttercream.  I mixed up a tan colored batch of marshmallow fondant and draped over the cake. I painted the inner part of the box with a wood grain pattern.  From here, we had to get the light in place.   Ben found a red LED light and a 9V battery and hooked up the current by pulling the wires through a straw that went down into the cake.  We lifted up the edge of the cake and pulled the wires out and around the side to hook to the battery behind the board.  And we had our power button!  Next, I baked a 10″ for the record/clock’s platform.  I painted it black as ready for the clock.  I created a round circle of white fondant and began to stretch the sides as if it were melting.  I rolled back the edges to give it a lip and painted the rim gold with a vodka/gold luster dust mix.  I hand painted the numbers with black food coloring and came back with a black edible marker to clean up the edges,  We placed the hands on the clock to be 8:08 to symbolize their wedding date.  Finally, I added to top dial to the watch which is on every Dali clock.  After the clock was complete we attached the fondant speakers which were gridded and painted gold to the sides of the box  and the gold plated edges around the corners of the cake.  While I formed the knobs and record arm Ben created the gold edge around the bottom of the cake.  After 15 hours baking/decorating it was a piece of art!

We delivered the cake to Clarksville, attended the wedding and smiled as they smashed the cake into each others faces.  Ben and I wish the newlyweds nothing but happiness and success as you start this new adventure.  We’ll always be here for you guys and love you very much.  God Bless.

• WEDDING IN NASHVILLE

The sister of a great friend contacted me about having a wedding on June 7, 2008 in Nashville, TN. She wanted a cake to feed around 175 people. Simple yet Elegant. So we went with a four tier round design. A French Vanilla Cake with Homemade Buttercream Filling and Homemade Marshmallow Fondant. The Satin Ribbon around the base of each tier matched the bridesmaid dresses, finished with white buttercream pearl and a Monogram topper. It took about 13 hours to complete this cake with a 2 hour delivery.

So Ben and I made it to Nashville in one piece with no accidents or crushed cakes, but I did hold my breath the whole way. We transported the two bottom tiers stacked together and the top two tiers stacked together. We did the final assembling when we got to the church. She had someone to cut and serve the cake so we didn’t have to stay but we did hear it was a hit. I’ll try and get my hands on some pictures of them demolishing the cake to post.
